MCU Movie Promises Darker Take on Hero

A brand new Spider-Man: Brand New Day trailer is out for the latest MCU movie. The new trailer highlights an entirely new version of Peter Parker than before.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is being directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, who previously helmed the MCU film Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, which was released in 2021. Cretton was also attached to direct the fourth Avengers movie for a time, back when it was called Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, but stepped down from the position in November 2023.

The movie will once again be led by Tom Holland as he reprises his role as Peter Parker/Spider-Man. Emmy winner Zendaya and Jacob Batalo are also expected to return for the sequel. They will be joined by cast members Sadie Sink (Stranger Things), Liza Colón-Zayas (The Bear), Jon Bernthal, and Tillman, among others. The movie is produced by Kevin Feige, Amy Pascal, Rachel O’Connor, and Avi Arad.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day trailer review

The new trailer highlights one of the biggest aspects of the upcoming movie, specifically in that we’ll see a much darker take on Spider-Man than we’ve seen in past MCU films. A large portion of the upcoming movie focuses on Tom Holland’s Peter Parker dealing with the events after 2021’s No Way Home, in which the universe’s memory of Spider-Man and his identity is wiped, including that of his best friend Ned and girlfriend MJ.

Following the memory wipe, as well as the death of Aunt May and Tony Stark, and that leaves Peter mostly all alone throughout this movie. The trailer highlights this, showing how his lack of any real companionship is having on him. Not only is Parker mentally not happy about things, but his body also looks to be going through some changes, which will throw him into even more of a spiral.

While the new movie is undoubtedly going to feature a ton of traditionally hero-esque moments, it will be fun to see Spider-Man in this new light. Not many of the live-action Spider-Man films have dealt with Parker in such a darker state, and the ones that have have not been received too well. With Brand New Day, though, Marvel Studios has the chance to get things right, and showcase a side of Spider-Man that we’ve never seen before in movies.
