Lizzo just revealed the go-to meals she regularly turned to throughout her weight loss journey that helped her reach — and surpass — her weight loss goal.
The “Truth Hurts” singer revealed to Women’s Health that her diet now consists mainly of protein and vegetables.
For breakfast, the singer will eat two scrambled eggs, chicken sausage and a cauliflower hash brown. When that midday slump hits, she’ll typically have a Thai chicken salad or lettuce wraps filled with tuna or sliced chicken for lunch. Dinnertime is reserved for turkey meatloaf with cauliflower mashed potatoes and green beans which she eats before 5 p.m., a time slot the artist insists is key for her health.
“I have GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease), so my body needs time to digest food before I go to sleep, so acid doesn’t roll up to my throat,” Lizzo says.
Throughout the day, the singer leaves room for snacks including low-sugar Greek yogurt with blueberries or blackberries and a drizzle of honey. Coffee remains a staple for her, though it now looks like one cup of coffee with vanilla protein instead of numerous Frappuccinos a day.
Though she sticks to her routine, Lizzo prioritizes listening to her body and eats food outside of this rotation when she wants. For her, meals such as waffles with chicken tenders or crab legs satisfy her cravings.
“There’s a balance,” the singer says, “I think that’s what true health is.”
In 2020, the singer became vegan, even celebrating her six-month journey on TikTok. This June, however, Lizzo shared a difficult truth during a podcast episode: “I wasn’t getting the nutrients I needed,” she said. Once she reintroduced certain animal products to her diet, she saw noticeable weight loss results.
“When I was vegan, I was consuming a lot of fake meats,” she said at the time. “I was eating a lot of bread. I was eating a lot of rice. And I had to eat a lot of it to stay full. But really, I was consuming like 3,000 to 5,000 calories a day.” Even foods, including protein bars, that she once considered healthy, she realized are packed with artificial ingredients, high amounts of sodium and added sugars. By focusing on a diet that consists of whole foods, the singer feels more satisfied after her meals.
Through it all, Lizzo stays true to herself. “I like how I look now,” the singer told Women’s Health.
“I’m still wearing plus-size clothing. I have the same rolls. I got the same belly, the same thighs — I think I’m just a smaller version.” These changes, she said, have also alleviated her back pain and she can now wear heels for an longer periods.
“Body positivity has nothing to do with staying the same. Body positivity is the radical act of daring to exist loudly and proudly in a society that told you you shouldn’t exist,” she said.
