Kevin Costner’s Ambitious Western Flop Finds New Streaming Home

Kevin Costner‘s 2024 western movie will land on Amazon Prime Video later this month. It is the first entry in this four-part saga, exploring the American West before and after the American Civil War.

Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 to stream on Prime Video in May

Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 will become available to stream on Amazon Prime Video from Saturday, May 23, 2026.

The story is based on an original concept by Kevin Costner. He reportedly got the idea in 1988 and worked on it for a while before approaching Disney in 2003. But when the studio offered $5 million less than the budget he required, Costner walked away. He returned in 2012 to complete the script with Jon Baird (via GQ).

Alongside writing, directing, and starring in the movie, he also personally invested $38 million of his own money, producing it under his banner, Territory Pictures. The final budget for the first chapter came to $100 million (via Variety). However, the Yellowstone star didn’t shoot just one movie; he filmed the first two chapters back-to-back, with Chapter 2 also costing a reported $100 million.

Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 follows multiple interconnected stories set in the American West during the Civil War era. In one storyline, settlers try to build a home called Horizon in the Arizona Territory. But their attempts are met with violent conflicts with the local Apache tribe, who are defending their land.

In another storyline, a woman named Lucy flees Montana Territory with her son, Sam, after shooting a man, James Sykes, and assumes a new identity as Ellen. Soon after, James’ sons begin to hunt her.

The movie’s cast also features Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Jena Malone, Michael Rooker, Giovanni Ribisi, Jamie Campbell Bower, and Abbey Lee, among others.

Released on June 28, 2024, the movie opened to mixed reviews, earning a 51% Tomatometer score and a 70% Popcornmeter score on Rotten Tomatoes. And at the box office, it made $38.8 million worldwide.

Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2 premiered a few months later at the 81st Venice International Film Festival. It was also intended for release the same year. But due to the box office failure of the first one, the release was delayed indefinitely. Reportedly, Costner has already shot a large part of Chapter 3 (via ScreenRant).
