The new OnePlus N6 smartphone, which was poised to be a great budget option in India, actually launched at 22,999 rupees with 4GB RAM. This is something many companies wouldn’t dare offer in a smartphone priced at 20,000+ rupees.
However, such is the situation right now in 2026 due to absurd memory and storage prices that have affected everything from desktops and laptops to smartphones and even TVs. Seeing a smartphone with 4GB RAM was truly surprising.
Is the era of 4GB RAM on mobile phones back in 2026? It would appear so, but there’smore to the story than meets the eye. You will find more on the story below.

Mobile phones with 4GB RAM could be a more common sight soon

The RAMpocalypse that started in late 2025 has gone far beyond what anyone imagined. It has gotten so bad that even new consoles like the Steam Machine are now launching at around ₹1 lakh.
Rumors even suggested the upcoming PS6 could also be priced around ₹1 lakh. Now, OnePlus has launched its new N6 smartphone with 4GB RAM, even though it costs 22,999 rupees. Just a year and a half ago, I purchased the Poco F6 for the same 22,999 rupees, and it included 8GB of RAM.
Even smartphones launching in 2026, after the RAMpocalypse started, had at least 6GB in the base model. However, the OnePlus N6 base variant has only 4GB despite costing over 20,000, which is truly a shame.
The problem is: It is unlikely to be the last smartphone to include only 4GB RAM at around 20,000 to 25,000 or even 30,000 rupees, as the cost of RAM and storage is not coming down. In fact, the Strategic Customer Agreements (SCAs) that memory makers like Micron and others are signing right now could mean these absurd RAM and storage prices will continue until 2030.
As such, mobile phones with 4GB RAM could become a more common sight soon.
