iPhone Duo costs ₹2,99,900 in India but around ₹2.13 lakh in Hong Kong. Here is the full calculation including flights, visa, hotel, food, transport and Indian Customs duty.

iPhone Duo: Hong Kong has the cheaper iPhone Duo, but Malaysia can have the cheaper overall trip.

iPhone Duo, Apple’s first foldable iPhone, is coming to India on October 23 with a starting price of ₹2,99,900 for the 256GB model. That makes India one of the more expensive markets for Apple’s first foldable iPhone. It also raises an obvious question for Indian buyers: is it cheaper to fly to another country, buy the iPhone Duo there and bring it back to India?

Hong Kong and Malaysia immediately stand out, but they are not the only options. Thailand, Singapore, Vietnam, China, Japan, South Korea and the UAE are also selling the iPhone Duo.

And there is a twist. Hong Kong has the cheaper iPhone Duo, but Malaysia can have the cheaper overall trip.

Once flights, visa or entry requirements, hotels, food, local transport, foreign-exchange charges and Indian Customs are included, the country with the cheapest Apple Store price is not necessarily the country that gives an Indian traveller the lowest final cost.

iPhone Duo India Price Difference

Apple has officially priced the 256GB iPhone Duo at ₹2,99,900 in India. The same phone starts at HK$17,499 in Hong Kong and RM9,499 in Malaysia. Apple has also confirmed October 23 availability in all three markets.

Apple’s official prices across several Asian markets show just how different the cost can be.

Exchange rates move constantly, so the rupee figures are approximate. Apple’s official listings confirm the local prices for Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, Vietnam, China, Japan and South Korea.

A recent comparison by Japanese price-tracking site Nukeni, reported by VnExpress, also puts Hong Kong, the UAE and Malaysia among the cheaper markets for the 256GB Duo, while Thailand, Singapore, Vietnam and the Philippines are more expensive. The comparison put the US at $1,999, Hong Kong at $2,231, the UAE at $2,314 and Malaysia at $2,334. India was listed at $3,129.

So, purely on the phone price, Hong Kong is ahead of Malaysia. But the flight changes the calculation.

Malaysia Vs Hong Kong: The Flight Cost

Let’s assume the traveller is starting from Delhi. Current Air India fares show Delhi-Kuala Lumpur return economy fares from around ₹19,186 in October and ₹19,235 in November. These are fares displayed by the airline and can change before booking.

For Delhi-Hong Kong, Cathay Pacific currently shows October and November return economy fares from around ₹37,120, with some specific dates around ₹37,070–₹39,500.

That creates an important difference:

In other words, Hong Kong can save you roughly ₹10,000 more on the iPhone, but the flight can cost roughly ₹15,000–₹20,000 more.

That is why Malaysia can end up cheaper overall.

What About Thailand?

Thailand is particularly interesting because its iPhone Duo price is below Malaysia’s in rupee terms depending on the exchange rate, although it remains above Hong Kong.

Apple Thailand lists the 256GB Duo at ฿79,900. Thai Airways is currently displaying Delhi-Bangkok return economy fares from around ₹35,145–₹36,322 on several October combinations.

Thailand also has an important visa advantage for Indian travellers. The Thai Embassy in New Delhi says the revised rules effective September 15, 2026 provide Indian passport holders with a 30-day visa exemption for tourism.

So Thailand is easy to visit, but the cheaper airfare available to Kuala Lumpur means Malaysia can still have an advantage for someone travelling solely to buy the phone.

Singapore Looks Easy, But The iPhone Duo Costs More

Apple Singapore lists the 256GB iPhone Duo at S$3,099, or roughly ₹2.33 lakh at recent exchange rates. Air India currently shows Delhi-Singapore fares from around ₹11,953 in October on its fare calendar.

That cheap flight makes Singapore more competitive than the phone price alone suggests. However, accommodation and everyday expenses can be higher than Kuala Lumpur, and Indian travellers need to obtain a Singapore entry visa. That means the overall saving can be much smaller than the headline phone-price difference suggests.

What About Vietnam?

Vietnam is another Asian market where the iPhone Duo is cheaper than in India. Apple Vietnam lists the 256GB model at VND64,999,000, approximately ₹2.5 lakh at recent exchange rates. That is only around ₹50,000 below the Indian price before travelling.

Vietnam also has a significant travel-cost problem from Delhi. Vietnam Airlines is currently showing Delhi-Ho Chi Minh City return economy fares from around ₹41,636 for some December-January dates, with higher fares appearing on other dates.

For someone travelling only to buy the iPhone, the combination of a relatively high phone price and airfare makes Vietnam less compelling.

China, Japan and South Korea

While the price of iPhone Duo in China, South Korea and Japan is way cheaper compared to India but the cost of flights, visa and hotels along with the visa processing timelines are a different story altogether.

What about Dubai?

Dubai remains a popular destination for Indians buying Apple products. Apple UAE lists the iPhone Duo from AED8,499. That is approximately ₹2.20–₹2.21 lakh.

The UAE can therefore compete with Malaysia on the phone price, but airfare, accommodation and the cost of a tourist visa need to be added to the calculation.

Dubai also has a tourist VAT-refund system for eligible purchases, but travellers should check whether and how an Apple Store purchase qualifies and what documentation is required before assuming that the displayed price will fall further.

The Big Comparison: Phone Price Vs Total Trip Cost

For a Delhi traveller, a useful planning comparison looks like this.

These are approximate planning figures, not fixed package prices. Airfares can change significantly by date, airline, baggage and booking time.

Malaysia Vs Hong Kong: The Best Options?

If the list is narrowed down to the two destinations that make the most sense for an Indian traveller making a short shopping trip, Malaysia and Hong Kong stand out for different reasons.

Hong Kong: cheaper iPhone, free Indian Pre-arrival Registration, direct flights from Delhi and a relatively short journey.

Malaysia: slightly more expensive iPhone, but much cheaper return fares can be available from Delhi, visa exemption for Indians and generally lower accommodation and daily expenses.

What Would A No-Hotel Trip Cost?

Suppose the traveller does not stay in a hotel and spends only on the essentials.

On these assumptions, Malaysia could be roughly ₹5,000–₹10,000 cheaper overall, even though its iPhone costs around ₹10,000 more.

What If You Stay For Two Nights?

For a more realistic two-night trip, add approximately ₹5,000–₹8,000 per night for a basic hotel in Kuala Lumpur and potentially ₹5,000–₹8,000 or more per night in Hong Kong, depending heavily on the area and dates.

Food and local transport could add another ₹5,000–₹10,000 for two days.

Again, the exact answer depends heavily on the flight and hotel deal you find.

What About Indian Customs?

This is the biggest variable in the entire calculation.

India’s Baggage Rules, 2026 replaced the earlier framework from February 2, 2026. CBIC says Customs duty is charged on the value of dutiable goods that is above the applicable duty-free allowance. The new rules also distinguish between eligible personal effects and other dutiable articles.

The CBIC’s current passenger guidance says used personal effects required for daily necessities and travel souvenirs can be cleared duty-free, while the general duty-free allowance applies to eligible baggage.

For Indian residents arriving by air, the current general allowance is ₹75,000.

This is important because an overseas iPhone purchase should not simply be treated as “₹2.2 lakh phone minus ₹75,000 equals taxable amount” in every circumstance. The exact treatment depends on the nature of the goods and the circumstances in which the passenger is bringing them into India.

For example, a genuinely used personal phone can be treated differently from a newly purchased, unopened device. A traveller should not assume that merely removing the packaging automatically guarantees duty-free treatment.

Anyone planning the trip specifically to buy an iPhone should therefore retain the invoice and check the applicable Customs rules before returning to India.

The older CBIC passenger guide quoted a 38.5% baggage-duty calculation, but that document predates the 2026 framework and should not be used as the current rule without checking the new regulations.

So What Happens If Customs Duty Is Added?

Take Malaysia as an example. If the iPhone Duo costs around ₹2.23 lakh and a Customs assessment treated the new phone as a dutiable article after the applicable ₹75,000 allowance, the amount above the allowance would be around ₹1.48 lakh.

Using a hypothetical 35% rate for illustration would produce around ₹51,800 in duty.

For Hong Kong, a ₹2.13 lakh phone would have approximately ₹1.38 lakh above the ₹75,000 allowance. At the same illustrative rate, that would be around ₹48,300.

But these are illustrations, not a Customs bill. The actual assessment depends on the applicable rules and the circumstances of the traveller and goods.

And this is why a seemingly huge overseas saving can disappear once the phone is legally treated as a dutiable new import.

The Foreign Exchange Cost Is Easy To Forget

There is another small cost that can add up: paying for a ₹2 lakh-plus phone in foreign currency.

If your Indian credit or debit card charges a foreign-exchange markup, the final amount can be higher than the simple exchange-rate conversion.

For example, a 2% effective forex cost on a ₹2.2 lakh purchase would add approximately ₹4,400.

A zero-forex card can therefore make a difference, while dynamic currency conversion at the point of sale should generally be approached carefully because it can use an unfavourable exchange rate.

What About AppleCare And Warranty?

This is another point that should be checked before buying overseas.

Apple says iPhone Duo is sold in more than 70 countries and regions, including India, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand, the UAE and Vietnam. The device comes with AppleCare+ options in supported markets.

However, buyers should check Apple’s current warranty and service terms for the exact regional model before purchasing abroad. Regional hardware and connectivity configurations can vary, and service availability can depend on the country.

Note: The iPhone Duo Is eSIM-Only

Apple’s product page says the iPhone Duo uses eSIM and does not have a physical SIM tray. Apple also says an unlocked iPhone purchased directly from Apple can be used with a compatible carrier, subject to network support.

Indian buyers should therefore check eSIM support with their Indian operator before making the trip. This is particularly important for anyone who still relies on a physical SIM.

Malaysia, Hong Kong Or Another Country?

If you are comparing only the Apple Store prices, Hong Kong is the standout option among the practical destinations considered here.

If you are comparing the complete cost of flying from Delhi, buying the phone and returning to India without spending much on accommodation, Malaysia becomes much more competitive because of the significantly lower flight fares currently available.

Thailand also deserves a look, particularly because Indian tourists now have a 30-day visa exemption, but current Delhi-Bangkok fares can be considerably higher than Delhi-Kuala Lumpur fares.

Singapore has some very cheap flight dates but a higher Duo price. Japan and South Korea have relatively low phone prices but much higher airfares. Vietnam’s phone price is closer to India’s. China looks excellent on the phone-price calculation but requires a different travel and visa calculation.

If you are already going to Malaysia, Hong Kong, Singapore, Dubai or another destination for work or a holiday, buying the iPhone Duo there can make sense because the flight and hotel are not being incurred solely for the phone.

However, if  you are flying abroad only for the iPhone Duo then it  is much harder to justify financially. A ₹2.13 lakh Hong Kong iPhone can quickly become a ₹2.6 lakh-plus purchase after the flight and basic expenses. A ₹2.23 lakh Malaysian iPhone can have a similar final cost because the flight is cheaper.
