A Chinese restaurant located in Mei Tin Commercial Complex in Hong Kong’s Sha Tin district has been burgled, with HK$800,000 (US$100,300) in cash stolen, according to police.

The force received a report from a 54-year-old staff member at around 6.30am on Monday, and deployed officers to the scene.

“After a preliminary count, it is believed that around HK$800,000 in cash has gone missing,” police said.

The case was listed as a burglary. No one has been arrested so far.

The restaurant owner reportedly said his staff returned to the eatery early in the morning and found the office ransacked and the safe open.

He said the stolen money included earnings of the restaurant’s seven branches over the past two days and some cash for emergencies.
