Hong Kong’s innovation and technology minister has cancelled his trip to the United States, just four hours after the government announced his three-day itinerary for the visit.
In a statement issued at 4.20pm on Tuesday, the government said that Secretary for Innovation, Technology and Industry Sun Dong had cancelled his visit to the US, without explaining the reason behind the decision.
An insider told the Post that Sun, together with the delegation he was leading to the US, had not yet boarded their flight.
The cancellation came amid rising geopolitical tensions after China condemned the US for attacking Venezuela.
In an earlier statement released at 12pm on Tuesday, the government said Sun would visit the United States to promote the city’s technological strengths and engage with local tech companies.
Sun was due to begin his three-day visit to Las Vegas and San Francisco, California, from Tuesday, according to the earlier statement.
