Hong Kong lawmaker Starry Lee says NPC role not in conflict with Legco presidency

Hong Kong lawmaker Starry Lee Wai-king has said her role as a delegate to China’s top legislative body is not in conflict with the presidency of the legislature, as she looks to unite lawmakers and align their work with national goals.

Lee, a member of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress (NPC), was responding to a question about whether she would seek the presidency of the Legislative Council.

Without giving a definitive reply, she said details would be clearer during the Legco presidency nomination period, after the newly elected lawmakers take their oath on January 1, and conduct a Legco President election.

She added she had been considering ways to unite lawmakers, promote the legislature’s alignment with national strategies, help the administration achieve good governance, and reflect public views.

Her role as the delegate of the NPC would not affect her local duties, Lee said.

“I do not see a conflict between my roles in the National People’s Congress and the Legislative Council, because the interests of the nation and Hong Kong are aligned,” she said.

Lee said that NPC delegates had to attend meetings in Beijing every two months, in which around four meetings would clash with the Legco schedule every year.
