A sudden outbreak has put Danish poultry exports on hold.
Hong Kong has suspended imports of poultry meat and eggs from Holbæk Municipality following reports of highly pathogenic bird flu, My News reports.
The move follows official notifications from the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) confirming outbreaks of the highly pathogenic H5N1 and H5 strains of avian influenza.
Imports from Japan’s Iwate prefecture have also been halted.
The move took immediate effect. Traders were instructed to stop shipments to protect public health.
Last year, Hong Kong imported around 450 tonnes of frozen poultry meat and about 210,000 eggs from Denmark. In comparison, imports from Japan were significantly higher.
Hong Kong authorities say they are in close contact with Danish officials and will continue to monitor the situation.
Further measures may follow depending on how the outbreak develops.
