A Hong Kong district councillor who illegally parked his car and blocked access to a fire exit lane has been “sternly reminded” to watch his conduct, a minister has said, following a similar offence by a colleague within a week.
Secretary for Home and Youth Affairs Alice Mak Mei-kuen revealed on Friday that the Kwai Tsing district officer had already “sternly reminded” Poon Chi-shing in writing to act in accordance with the public’s expectations.
“The government attaches great importance to the performance of duties of the district councillors. Their behaviour and actions in daily life should be aligned with the public’s expectations of their roles,” she said.
On Tuesday, it was reported that Poon had parked his car in a spot obstructing emergency vehicle access at Kwai Fong Plaza.
Two days later, Poon, a member of the city’s largest party, the Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong, issued an apology on social media.
“I understand that this event has caused the public to have a bad perception. I promise I will be more mindful in the future,” he wrote.
Mak said she would send reminders to all district councillors once again.
