Hong Kong police have arrested a 49-year-old bus driver on suspicion of dangerous driving causing death after a collision that killed two people on the Lantau Link highway.

The double-decker operated by Long Win Bus was travelling on the Tsing Yi section of the highway headed towards Tung Chung on route E32A when it rammed into a stationary taxi at 11.16pm on Monday, the force said.

Firefighters were called to the scene to rescue the 66-year-old taxi driver and his 37-year-old male passenger, who were trapped inside the wreckage.

Both were unconscious when they were rushed to Yan Chai Hospital in Tsuen Wan. Despite showing no visible external injuries, they were pronounced dead at 12.15am and 12.43am, respectively, on Tuesday.

A 66-year-old female passenger on the bus also sustained minor injuries to her mouth and was treated at Princess Margaret Hospital in Kwai Chung.

The taxi’s front and rear were severely damaged, and its back tyres burst upon impact. The front of the bus was also damaged, with its windscreen shattered.
