Don’t forget to buckle up! Passengers will now be required to wear seatbelts on bus rides or face hefty fines and even imprisonment. While some of us already strap in for dear life on minibus rides, it often slips our minds on other buses. The new seat belt rule for Hong Kong rolls out on January 25, 2026. Here’s everything you need to know about the new Hong Kong seatbelt rule.
Details and fines of the new seat belt rule for Hong Kong

Ahead of new regulations taking effect on January 25, Hong Kong’s major franchised bus operators are stepping up measures to remind passengers to fasten their seat belts. If buckling up on the bus will be a new habit for you, here’s everything you need to know to avoid fines and penalties under the incoming rules.
Where the mandatory seat belt rule applies: All passengers in public and private buses, including minibuses and school buses, must wear seat belts if they are fitted. And rear passenger seats in private light buses must also wear their seat belts.
Fines and penalties: A maximum fine of HKD 5,000 and up to three months in prison.

These new rules are part of an effort to enhance road safety. Especially in view of recent bus accidents in the city, some of which have tragically claimed multiple lives. It’s a sobering reminder that wearing a seat belt can reduce the risk of death or severe injury in an accident by up to 70%. Better safe than sorry, and always, safety first. Share this with your friends and family so they can stay informed, too.
