Critics Are Not Loving Mindy Kaling’s New Hulu Series at All

Mindy Kaling‘s new Hulu comedy series has drawn divisive reviews from critics, leading to a terrible score on Rotten Tomatoes. Kaling created Not Suitable for Work, and Charlie Grandy, whose resume includes The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, Saturday Night Live, and The Office, serves as the showrunner. The plot revolves around a group of workaholics trying to navigate between professional success and personal happiness.

What critics are saying about Not Suitable for Work in reviews

Not Suitable for Work has garnered mixed-to-negative responses from critics. Michael Savio of Slant Magazine wrote, “At the end of a long day at the office, Not Suitable for Work is escapist fare that emerges less like the imagining of a genuine creative force and more like a cut-and-paste consumer product concocted in a McKinsey boardroom. It’s not irritating enough to warrant full-throated derision but not funny, endearing, or memorable enough to recommend around the water cooler.”

Meanwhile, Nandini Balial of RogerEbert.com compared the show to Kaling’s previous works and noted that, like them, it “offers too many clichés to result in anything other than mediocrity.”

TV Guide’s Maggie Fremont also gave the series a negative review. “It feels like in order to stand out, Not Suitable for Work is fighting against what people love about hangout shows: the actual hanging out,” Fremont wrote.

In contrast to all these, the show got a positive response from The Hollywood Reporter’s Angie Han. “Its ensemble is broadly appealing, stuffed with fresh faces you might sorta recognize but who haven’t broken out big just yet,” Han observed. “Its vibe is reliably funny, lightly sweet, and generally chill. In short, it’s a nice hang.”

Not Suitable for Work gets a poor score on Rotten Tomatoes

Not Suitable for Work debuted on Hulu on June 2, 2026, and currently has a 50% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. This number will likely change as more reviews come in, but they are unlikely to make a significant difference in the rating.
