Saw 11 is finally being made after a long delay, and it even has a new director. Mike P. Nelson will direct the next installment, bringing James Wan back as a producer.
Lionsgate and Blumhouse’s Atomic Monster announced Nelson as director. Gregory Weidman and Geoff Tock will write the screenplay, while Wan, Jason Blum, and Leigh Whannell will produce. The project will continue the franchise’s existing mythology rather than rebooting its continuity.
Saw 11 has had a tough time coming to fruition
Saw 11 took a complicated path before securing a director, but the project is now moving ahead with Nelson leading the film. Wan’s return links the sequel to the filmmaker who launched the franchise with its original movie.
In an official statement, Wan said, “Making the original Saw was a defining experience for me, so it was essential to find a director who would honor that world. Mike has a raw, distinctive filmmaking voice with an inventive approach to the genre, and I believe he’ll bring something truly unique and special to the franchise.”
The original Saw premiered at the 2004 Sundance Film Festival after being made as a low-budget feature. Wan directed the film, while Whannell wrote the screenplay and starred alongside Cary Elwes.
Nelson has directed several horror projects, including Wrong Turn and Silent Night, Deadly Night. He also helmed a segment of V/H/S/85 and is set to bring Beware Boiúna to theaters.
Nelson said, “Being asked to play in this twisted sandbox with James is nothing short of a dream come true. Greg and Geoff and James have crafted such a wild script that brings the mystery of the original while exploring new insane bloody ideas that meld so well with the brutal moral compass of the franchise. Let the games begin!”
Screenwriters Weidman and Tock previously developed projects including Dune: Prophecy and In the Shadow of the Moon. Mark Burg, Oren Koules, Stacey Testro, Michael Clear, and Judson Scott serve as executive producers on the film.
Lionsgate has not yet set an official theatrical release date for Saw 11, and plot details and returning cast members remain under wraps.
