Xi Jinping’s Washington Visit: Chinese Business Delegation May Include BYD, Xiaomi, CATL – News and Statistics

According to Reuters, Washington and Beijing are in the process of settling on a slate of Chinese corporate leaders who would accompany President Xi Jinping on a forthcoming trip to Washington. Three people with knowledge of the matter said the group could feature firms already under US regulatory examination as they pursue wider market access.

The sources said final invitations will be dispatched to companies in the next few days. One of them added that the State Department is anticipated to authorize US visas for the delegation.

Two of the sources and four other individuals briefed on the matter said those under consideration include BYD, the prominent electric vehicle maker, Xiaomi, a smartphone producer that has also branched into EVs, battery companies CATL and Gotion, consumer electronics maker Hisense, auto parts supplier Wanxiang Group and state-owned Bank of China.

Bringing a sizable business delegation to the US would be an atypical step, given Washington’s hesitancy about Chinese investment and Beijing’s stricter supervision of private enterprise. The sources said the delegation’s participants have not been settled.

BYD declined to comment. CATL, Xiaomi, Wanxiang, Hisense, Gotion and Bank of China did not reply to requests for comment.

The sources said Chinese companies have been instructed to get ready, subject to confirmation at this weekend’s gathering between US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng. They declined to be named because the plans are not public.

A US Treasury spokesperson directed Reuters questions to the White House, which did not respond. China’s foreign ministry said it had no information when asked by Reuters. The commerce ministry did not respond to a request for comment.

CHINESE COMPANIES IN DELEGATION FACE ISSUES IN US

One source said Xi intends to bring companies confronting US sanctions, blacklists or other regulatory pressure, echoing Trump’s choice to bring executives from US firms under Chinese scrutiny on his Beijing visit in May.

A Biden-era rule will prohibit China-linked manufacturers from selling new connected passenger vehicles in the United States starting with model year 2027, including vehicles built in the country, while limiting Chinese software and hardware in such cars. Washington also levies a 100% tariff on Chinese EVs.

US automakers have pressed Trump not to open the market to Chinese automakers. Trump said last week he would back Chinese companies building cars in the US.

CATL and BYD were placed on a Pentagon list of companies in January 2025 and June 2026 respectively over alleged ties to China’s military. Ford licenses CATL technology for batteries produced at its Michigan plant, a partnership that US lawmakers have criticized.
