Charlie Hunnam‘s Sons of Anarchy spin-off was nearly a movie before becoming a TV series. Hunnam created and wrote the project after wanting to reunite with his former co-stars. The FX series will see the actors play fictionalized versions of themselves as they face a dangerous situation after reuniting at a fan convention.
Legends brings Hunnam back alongside Ron Perlman, Katey Sagal, Maggie Siff, Mark Boone Junior, Tommy Flanagan, Kim Coates, and Theo Rossi. The series takes place more than a decade after Sons of Anarchy ended. Hunnam also clarified to The Hollywood Reporter that Legends is “definitely not season 8 of Sons of Anarchy.”
Charlie Hunnam explains what came after bringing Legends to life
The idea for Legends came from Hunnam’s desire to work with his former Sons of Anarchy castmates again. He previously told The Hollywood Reporter that the concept was inspired by several dreams about the group being together again. That eventually led him to write a story that could bring them back to the screen.
The project initially existed as a film idea. Hunnam had written a screenplay before deciding to rework the concept as a television series. In an interview with E! News, he said, “I had written a spec film that I repurposed that idea basically into this.”
Hunnam added, “But really, the desire to get that group of people that I love, and this moment in time, that was really important to us, and be able to go and play with that crew again. But it’s very exciting.” He revealed that he has been writing since 2005, but he has struggled to bring his projects to life.
Hunnam recalled building “traction” and “momentum” on projects before taking on two acting jobs back-to-back. By the time he returned to his writing, he said, “nine months later, we’d lost all of the inertia.”
The actor remained determined to keep Legends moving forward. He continued working on the project until it became a reality. He said, “So, this was something that I just really—I stayed on it and stayed on it and stayed on it. It’s very exciting to get the crew back together.”
The original film concept has now evolved into a TV series. Legends will reunite the Sons of Anarchy cast through an unconventional meta story.
