The Mad Titan’s fate remains one of Marvel’s biggest what-ifs, but Josh Brolin isn’t shutting the door. The actor, who brought Thanos to life across the Infinity Saga, gave a deliberately open-ended response when asked whether the villain could make another MCU appearance.
Josh Brolin on if Thanos could return after Avengers: Endgame
Brolin appeared on Collider to promote The Dog Stars when interviewer Steve Weintraub switched gears and asked whether Thanos was truly gone or could return. “I don’t know how to answer that question,” Brolin replied. That answer leaves plenty of wiggle room, although it stops well short of confirming a comeback.
The conversation then took an unexpected turn. Brolin reflected on Thanos’ plan to erase half of all life, arguing that the villain’s reasoning was “not necessarily wrong” when viewed through the lens of humanity’s damage to the planet. He connected that thinking to The Dog Stars, where a deadly virus devastates the population and forces survivors into a brutal fight for existence.
For Marvel fans, the timing makes Brolin’s comments especially juicy. Thanos died during Avengers: Endgame after Tony Stark used the Infinity Stones to wipe out Thanos and his army. Marvel has not announced Brolin as part of Avengers: Doomsday, so his comments should not be treated as confirmation that the purple warlord will return.
Brolin’s other project also shaped the discussion. The Dog Stars, directed by Ridley Scott, follows Hig, played by Jacob Elordi, after a virus kills most of the Earth’s population. Brolin portrays Bangley, a survivalist who helps protect their isolated home from violent groups called Reapers. Margaret Qualley, Benedict Wong, Allison Janney and Guy Pearce are also part of the project. The film opens in theaters and IMAX on August 28.
The interview eventually moved away from Marvel and toward Brolin’s reunion with Scott, roughly two decades after American Gangster. Brolin admitted he initially thought Scott had “lost his mind” during rehearsals, but quickly changed his view once production began. The actor praised Scott’s experimental approach and said the experience became so enjoyable that he “didn’t want to work with anybody else.”
