Hong Kong’s privacy watchdog has arrested a boxer suspected of doxxing an opponent on social media by disclosing his personal information and workplace without consent.
The Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data (PCPD) said on Thursday that the 29-year-old suspect had targeted the victim twice. The pair fought each other at a boxing tournament in early 2025.
The suspect allegedly posted his opponent’s personal details on his social media accounts twice after the tournament — once in March last year and again this month
The posts included negative comments about the victim and disclosed his English name, Chinese “alias”, photo, social media account handle and workplace details.
The watchdog said the alleged premeditated conduct, intended to cause harm, violated the Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance. Those convicted face a maximum fine of HK$1 million (US$127,600) and up to five years in prison.
The suspect has been granted bail while the watchdog continues its investigation.
