The Clueless TV show sequel has been dealing with delays and roadblocks for years. However, a new update hints at the sitcom series finally making progress.
California’s Film and Television Tax Credit Program has selected the Clueless sequel as one of the nine new television shows awarded tax credits from the government (via Variety). Alongside Clueless, the Rockford Files, Newlyweds, and Love Comes Softly have been awarded the tax credits.
Information from the office of Governor Gavin Newsom also hinted that these productions are expected to bring $608 million in direct production spending across California. The productions will likely take 1,014 days filming in the Golden State.
The teen sitcom is based on the 1995 film Clueless. Meanwhile, the sequel series is produced by CBS Studios for streaming on Paramount+. The filming for the show is scheduled to begin in 2027.
Clueless has been trying to return to TV for years
The Clueless sequel series was first set up in early 2025 as a project under Peacock. However, in April 2026, it was announced that the show would no longer proceed forward as a project under Peacock. Following that setback, Paramount+ picked it up as a six-episode limited event series.
Robert Lawrence, who produced the original 1995 film, will produce the sequel series. The sitcom series is written by Josh Schwartz, Stephanie Savage, and Jordan Weiss. The three writers will also serve as executive producers.
Alicia Silverstone will take on her role of Cher Horowain. Silverstone will also be an executive producer on the show, alongside director Amy Heckerling. While Silverstone is confirmed to reprise her role, additional cast members have not yet been officially announced.
While the Clueless sequel does not have an official release date yet, the production will start in 2027 in Los Angeles.
