Spider-Man: Brand New Day has successfully broken a longstanding Avengers tradition. Ahead of the movie’s July 31, 2026, theatrical release, critics gave the premiere an overwhelming response.
Speaking about the movie, @PickYourBrain wrote on X (formerly Twitter), “Peter Parker is changing, and so is the ‘Spider-Man’ franchise. #SpiderManBrandNewDay is the most emotional, most mature, and most atmospheric installment in the franchise. It’ll meet your expectations in some places and defy them in others.”
Further, @PNemiroff wrote, “SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY is absolutely fantastic. Far and away a favorite of the recent MCU installments. It’s largely about the importance of work-life balance and community, and, OH MY, do writers Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers ensure those ideas hit hard. Can’t believe how emotional the film made me. One beat in particular around the midpoint of the movie really caught me off guard in that respect. Shocked I was able to rein it back in after.”
Meanwhile, @MultiverseColor pointed out, “#SpiderManBrandNewDay is a bold swing in the right direction for an evolving character and franchise. It keeps what you love while balancing a more mature tone that meets the characters where they are. And the action scenes look phenomenal! @SpiderManMovie.”
Early reviews suggest Marvel breaks its Avengers setup formula
As Spider-Man: Brand New Day approaches its much-awaited release, MCU fans were worried about a major trend. In the past, any project released before a major Avengers movie had turned out to be a filler. If not, then the events of the movie/series would set up the upcoming Avengers movie. Thus, fans shared concerns that the latest Spider-Man movie, too, would follow a similar direction.
After all, Avengers: Doomsday is Marvel’s big release this year. And despite Tom Holland not yet being confirmed for Doomsday, concerns were raised about whether the studios will try to do something different.
Going by the early reviews, the critics have stated that there has been no major Doomsday setup in the upcoming movie. Rather, Destin Daniel Cretton has tried to weave an independent story focusing solely on the audience’s friendly neighborhood superhero.
Reflecting on the movie, the franchise producer, Amy Pascal, stated per Entertainment Weekly that the movie stresses “not wanting to be who you are.” Rather, “It’s about wanting to be anybody else but who you are.” She continued, “and it’s about the desire to fit in and to not be different and to learn to understand that being different is okay – and maybe great. We definitely don’t see [Spider-Man: Brand New Day] as a closing.… It’s a beginning.”
