Under the new manager for Germany Jürgen Klopp, Joshua Kimmich will continue to lead Die Mannschaft. The sporting director Rudi Völler who also kept his job amidst a major reshuffle in the nation setup signalled that the armband will not be changing hands under the new gaffer.
At the International Coaches Congress in Mainz, the former German international commented on the captaincy situation under the rebuild of Klopp. “I would assume so” said the sporting director on whether Kimmich would remain the German captain. “Jo Kimmich has shown in many internationals that he is a standard-bearer, a great captain. I cannot imagine there will be any major change there,” he added (via Goal).
While the captaincy question is a crucial one, with Kimmich perhaps the more important decision will be to move him back to midfield. The World Cup clearly exposed his inability to carry out the right-back job. Klopp will have to find a suitable replacement and would find his captain better suited to be at the heart of a free flowing attacking system.
