The Punisher‘s inclusion in Spider-Man: Brand New Day may be leading the franchise into a bolder direction, but according to Tom Holland, the character’s addition also builds upon the shocking ending of 2021’s No Way Home. In a recent interview, The Odyssey star opened up about the dynamics between Frank Castle and Peter Parker in the upcoming Spider-Man feature, before revealing how the former’s appearance connects Part 3’s conclusion to Part 4’s narrative.
Tom Holland sheds more light on Punisher’s role in Spider-Man: Brand New Day
While speaking with Collider’s Perri Nemiroff, Holland dove into the relationship that his Spider-Man will share with Jon Bernthal’s Punisher in Brand New Day. He also explained that Castle’s presence in the movie actively taps into the theme of loss in Peter Parker’s life, which was established in the final moments of No Way Home.
“It’s more the progression of the relationship,” said Holland. “I think the relationship on the page was always that. They would antagonize each other, and that was kind of as far as it would go.”
He further added, “But as we started working together on set, this kind of, I would call it like big brother, little brother relationship started naturally, sort of blossoming as we were shooting, and I think Destin recognized that as kind of gold for the movie because the whole film is about Peter Parker not having any friends, and then finding a friend in the most unlikely partner.”
In Spider-Man 3, Peter Parker heroically agrees to erase everyone’s memory of him, leaving him without any friends or family. With Brand New Day focusing on the aftermath of this decision, Punisher, no stranger to loss and loneliness, unexpectedly becomes friends with a grieving Parker, adding to the character arc introduced in No Way Home.
Directed by Shang-Chi maker Destin Daniel Cretton, Spider-Man 4 swings into theaters on July 31, 2026.
