Andujar powers Salem; Arias stays hot in Portland


7/4 Cup of Coffee: The eve of America’s 250th birthday brought a split amongst the stateside contests, with two wins, two losses, and one rainout. Louis Andujar (pictured) had three hits to lead Salem’s win, while Franklin Arias and Brooks Brannon led Portland in a 16-hit barrage. Worcester’s winning streak came to an end in a one-run, come-from-behind defeat despite a strong effort by Jack Anderson. Greenville continues to reel, while the two DSL squads combined for eight hits as they were swept.

The WooSox jumped out to an early lead in their attempt to extend their winning streak to five games, but were doomed by a six-run rally in the sixth. Kristian Campbell led the way at the plate, going 3 for 4 with a run scored, RBI, stolen base, and two of Worcester’s six doubles. Braiden Ward also doubled twice, finishing 2 for 4 with a pair of runs scored. Mikey Romero drove in three runs as part of his 2-for-4 evening. It was the first WooSox appearance for newly acquired Brett Harris, who played third base and hit in the second spot in the lineup. Harris was 1 for 5 with an RBI. 

Starter Jack Anderson posted five shutout innings, scattering three hits, striking out three, and walking two. Zack Kelly came on for the sixth and did not retire a batter, allowing three hits and two walks, with all five baserunners coming on to score. Caleb Bolden was saddled with the loss, surrendering three runs (two earned) in two innings in addition to the three runners he inherited from Kelly. Sam McWilliams joined Harris in making his organizational debut, recording a scoreless eighth inning. The 30-year-old right-hander was signed to a minor league deal out of the Mexican League on Thursday.

Every Portland starter had at least one hit, totalling 16 knocks on a hot evening at Hadlock. Franklin Arias reached base four times, going 2 for 3 with a pair of walks (one intentional) and two runs scored. It was Arias’s 30th multi-hit effort in 66 games. Brooks Brannon doubled and drove in a pair in his 3-for-4 effort. Ronald Rosario also drove in two as he went 2 for 5 with a double. John Holobetz got the win, allowing two runs on four hits in 5 1/3 innings, striking out seven against just one walk. Holobetz retired the first nine batters he faced and was unscored upon until the sixth. Reidis Sena followed with 2 2/3, allowing a run on four hits, and Erik Rivera finished with a scoreless ninth.

A trio of Dash hurlers combined on a three-hitter as the Drive lost their eighth straight. Justin Gonzales, Yophery Rodriguez, and Antonio Anderson had matching lines, each going 1 for 3 with a walk. Greenville starter Alex Bouchard took the loss despite not allowing a hit in two innings. He walked two and struck out two. Tyler Davis was the Drive’s most effective reliever, allowing just two hits in 2 2/3 scoreless frames, striking out four without issuing a walk.

Louis Andujar had a second straight multi-hit effort to lead the RidgeYaks. The 18-year-old third baseman was 3 for 4 with two runs scored, two RBI, and a stolen base. Andrews Opata opened up the scoring with a two-run homer in the first inning. He added a single and a walk, and his 36th stolen base of the year moved him into a tie with Braiden Ward for the organizational lead. D’Angelo Ortiz doubled and drove in three as part of his 2-for-3 night. Christian Foutch turned in a strong start, allowing a run on three hits in 4 2/3 innings. He walked one and struck out a season-high eight batters. Yermain Ruiz picked up the winning decision in relief, giving up three runs on five hits in 4 1/3.

FCL Red Sox @ FCL Twins, postponed

Rainy weather in Fort Myers prevented this contest from getting started, so the two squads will celebrate the 4th of July with a doubleheader.

The day after snapping their 12-game losing streak, team Red was held to just four hits and fell back into the loss column. All four hits came from the top three batters in the lineup. Anderber Urbina was 2 for 4 and scored the team’s lone run on a double off the bat of Joskairo Ramirez. Dawvris Brito added a single and a walk. On the mound, Maikel Vargas took the loss, surrendering three runs (two earned) in 2 2/3. A strong effort from the bullpen kept things within striking distance. Harry Canedo allowed a run in 2 1/3, followed by 2 2/3 scoreless from Wascar Berroa

The Blue squad joined their Red counterparts by scratching out just four hits in their loss. Eber Miranda had two of those hits and two RBI on the day. After starting his pro career in a 0-for-24 skid, Miranda has hit safely in five straight, going 7 for 16. Esterlin Casanova doubled and scored a run. Juan Verdus made his second career appearance and first start, allowing three runs on three hits in three innings, walking three, and striking out three. Charlie Zink took the loss in relief.

Player of the Day: After a tough stretch in his adjustment to the Carolina League, Louis Andujar is showing signs of breaking out. Andujar was quickly promoted after a blazing start in the FCL, hitting .404/.483/.731 in 15 games. In his first 24 games with the RidgeYaks, he was just 11 for 88 (.125) with six runs scored and four RBI. During his 5-for-8 effort in his last two contests, he has scored three runs, driven in five, and raised his OPS at the level by 109 points. Andujar is currently ranked 37th in the system.
