Hong Kong police search 15 in former July 1 protest areas, man taken away

Hong Kong police have stopped and searched 15 people in areas where July 1 protests were previously held, with one man wearing a T-shirt with political undertones taken away.

The force said on Thursday that five men and 10 women, aged between 25 and 73, were stopped and searched in Wan Chai and the Eastern district the previous day, when the city marked the 29th anniversary of its return to Chinese rule.

The date also marked the fifth anniversary of a stabbing attack in which a lone assailant wounded a police officer outside a department store before killing himself.

Since then, security has been heightened each year. In recent years, some residents have brought white flowers to commemorate the incident.

On Wednesday evening, police cordoned off the area between East Point Road and Great George Street in Causeway Bay with red tape. Both plain-clothes and uniformed officers were seen patrolling nearby.

Officers also set up a platform equipped with a camera directed at pedestrians.
