The Handmaid’s Tale creator reunites with The Fantastic Four: First Steps director for a gripping new crime series at Hulu. The streamer is developing a TV adaptation of a bestselling legal thriller featuring a scandal-plagued police chief.
Suspect TV show in works at Hulu with Matt Shakman directing
Hulu is developing a TV series based on Scott Turow’s novel Suspect, Variety reported. Marissa Jo Cerar will write and executive produce the project. Meanwhile, Bruce Miller will executive produce alongside Priscilla Porianda through White Oak Pictures.
Additionally, Matt Shakman will direct and executive produce the series. MGM and Turow will also serve as executive producers on the project. Furthermore, 20th Television serves as the studio behind the development. The show follows Pinky, a private investigator searching for evidence. Specifically, she aims to exonerate a female police chief accused of extorting sex. The chief allegedly demanded sexual favors from male officers for job promotions.
Cerar previously collaborated with Miller as a supervising producer on The Handmaid’s Tale. Additionally, she created the ABC limited series Women of the Movement and Hulu’s Black Cake. She also served as showrunner on both shows and wrote for 13 Reasons Why and The Fosters.
Meanwhile, Miller concluded The Handmaid’s Tale after six seasons in 2025. The show earned 77 Emmy nominations during its run and won 15 awards. He recently created and launched the sequel series The Testaments on Hulu. Subsequently, that show quickly earned a Season 2 renewal from the streamer.
Furthermore, Shakman has earned three Emmy nominations for his directing work in television. His nominations came for the Hulu series The Great and Marvel’s WandaVision. He most recently helmed the Marvel film The Fantastic Four: First Steps and Apple TV’s Monarch. His extensive directing resume also spans Game of Thrones, The Boys, Succession, Billions, and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.
