The U.S. Forest Service has launched a new mobile app designed to help visitors plan trips to national forests and grasslands across the country.

The National Forests and Grasslands app, available for iOS and Android devices, provides information on more than 30,000 recreation sites and 165,000 miles of trails throughout the National Forest System.

Features include safety alerts, closure notices, offline maps, amenity information and activity-based searches for camping, fishing, hunting, boating, biking and horseback riding.

The agency said the app offers the most comprehensive collection of Forest Service recreation information ever made available to the public and is intended to help visitors navigate areas with limited cellular service.

The new platform replaces nearly 30 older Forest Service recreation apps and is being rolled out as part of Great Outdoors Month. The agency encourages visitors to download maps and check trail conditions and safety information before heading outdoors.
