Fresno Police to Conduct Distracted Driving Enforcement Operation Friday

The Fresno Police Department will conduct a traffic enforcement operation Friday focused on drivers suspected of violating California’s hands-free cell phone law.

The operation will target motorists who are using handheld cell phones or other electronic communications devices while driving.

Under California law, drivers are prohibited from holding a phone or electronic device while operating a vehicle. The law applies to activities including talking on the phone, texting and using mobile applications.

Drivers caught using a handheld cell phone while driving can be fined. A second violation within 36 months of a prior conviction for the same offense will result in a point being added to the driver’s record.

Police urged motorists who need to make an important phone call or program directions into a device to pull over in a safe parking location before using their phone. Drivers are also encouraged to silence their phones or place them out of reach before beginning a trip.

Funding for the enforcement program is provided through a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety via the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
