Barcelona have joined the race to sign Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon.
The Tyneside club are now in talks with both Bayern Munich and the Spanish giants over the 25-year-old.
Gordon was an unused sub in Newcastle’s last four games, as they protected him ahead of a summer move.
Gordon signed a long-term extension at Newcastle in October 2024 and has four years remaining on that deal. He finished as the club’s top scorer with 18 goals this season but was left out of the final six games of the Premier League season amid speculation regarding his future.
Sky Sports News reported earlier this month that Bayern Munich had opened talks and were keen on adding him to their attacking roster that also includes England captain Harry Kane, Michael Olise and Luis Diaz.
Gordon is one of a number of big-name players who could leave Newcastle this summer, with English and European clubs circling over Sandro Tonali and Tino Livramento.
Newcastle CEO David Hopkinson told reporters recently that the club may have to sell to buy big this summer, and Gordon is one of the club’s best assets.
The winger has not told Newcastle he wants to leave this summer but he could be on the move if the Magpies receive a big offer. Liverpool almost signed Gordon in the summer of 2024 but it remains to be seen if they will revive their interest in him.
If Gordon comes in, what happens to Rashford?
Sky Sports’ Callum Bishop:
“It seemed for the longest while that if Gordon was going to go anywhere, it would be Germany to add to an attacking line-up that was already filled with Premier League experience.
“Now Barcelona have entered the race, it throws the cat amongst the pigeons. Or Magpies, in this case.
“Not only is this an intriguing dilemma for Gordon and Newcastle, but it also begs the question of what happens with Marcus Rashford’s future?
“The Manchester United loanee has already made it clear that he wants to remain at Barcelona next season, and is believed to be willing to take a pay cut to make that happen. United don’t want to negotiate another loan deal and believe £26m option price is more than fair.
“If Barcelona don’t want to pay that given their financial restrictions, they won’t. But, they clearly still want to add more depth to the left side of their attack and Gordon could be the man they turn to.
“Both men are in Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for the World Cup, but could they be playing for more than glory? Could they instead be playing to convince Hansi Flick and the rest of the Barcelona hierarchy?”
