Colombia and China signed an academic alliance. Colombia’s Ministry of National Education oversaw the signing of two academic cooperation agreements with the People’s Republic of China on Thursday to strengthen research, technology transfer, and mobility in rural areas. Representatives from the South China Agricultural University, the University of Antioquia, and the National Pedagogical University signed the agreements in Bogota. The agreements seek to build applied scientific capacity in rural communities across the country.
The agreements include student and faculty exchanges, research internships, dual degree programs, and scientific cooperation in agricultural biotechnology. Through these initiatives, both nations aim to develop technological solutions to improve productivity and food security in their respective regions.
Investment in agro-industrial technology
The national government announced a US$1 million investment to establish the Agro-Industrial Technology and Innovation Center in Caucasia, Antioquia. The Ministry of Education will allocate these public funds to strengthen the Technological Development and Transfer Center in this subregion. The South China Agricultural University and the University of Antioquia will jointly lead this scientific complex to benefit the communities of the Lower Cauca region.
The institutions will focus the center’s efforts on designing solutions for rural development and food security in the region. Asian researchers will contribute advanced hybrid rice cultivation techniques and precision tillage adapted to local conditions. Colombian technicians will then transfer the acquired knowledge directly to farmers’ associations in the area.
The consolidation of commitments with Beijing
The new academic cooperation agreements are part of the working groups that the Minister of National Education, Daniel Rojas Medellin, initiated in May 2025. The minister secured these commitments during his official visit to the People’s Republic of China for the CELAC-China Summit. The Ministry of Education and its partner institutions anticipate the arrival of the first technical missions at the start of the next academic year.
The National Pedagogical University will focus its participation on training rural teachers and developing teaching methodologies for rural areas. The University of Antioquia, for its part, will facilitate the exchange of researchers and students through international mobility programs funded by both countries. The educational institutions will define the schedule of public calls for applications for Colombian beneficiaries in the coming weeks.
The profile of the Asian academic institution
As a technical backer of the agreement, South China Agricultural University operates as a public institution of higher education located in Guangdong Province. The university is part of China’s Double First-Class Construction program, a national initiative launched in 2017 to develop world-class universities and academic disciplines.
