Resurgent Bayern Munich attacker Serge Gnabry’s World Cup campaign is in jeopardy due to an adductor injury in his thigh. Gnabry’s Bundesliga outfit themselves confirmed the news on Saturday evening. Per Bayern, the 30-year-old will be out for an “extended period”. The unfortunate news comes near the end of Gnabry’s excellent year for both club and country.
Gnabry’s overall performance this year led to Bayern signing him to a contract extension that few anticipated he would receive at the beginning of the season. Overall, Gnabry has scored ten goals and added 11 assists in 37 appearances for Bayern across all competitions this season. He’s also added his 26th goal for Germany and collected his 59th cap.
Bayern certainly have no reason to risk playing Gnabry during the final month of current league campaign. In principle, Gnabry can return in time to join DFB camp in time to receive some training reps. The fact that Musiala is regaining fitness and young German phenom Lennart Karl now making an impact at senior level nevertheless render it, at the very least, unlikely that Gnabry can count on being a starter.
