King Charles III and Queen Camilla will travel to the United States from April 27 to 30 for a four-day trip marking America’s 250th anniversary with planned stops in Washington, DC, New York and Virginia.
The visit will be the first state visit by a British monarch since Queen Elizabeth II traveled to the U.S. in 2007 (to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the Jamestown settlement) and will include a White House reception, an address to Congress by the king and a formal state dinner.
“The visit will be an opportunity to recognize the shared history of our two nations; the breadth of the economic, security and cultural relationship that has developed since then, and the deep people-to-people connections which unite communities,” according to a release from the UK Embassy on Tuesday, April 14.
Here is what you need to know about the royals’ trip to the United States.
Royal itinerary
According to the UK Embassy, the king and queen will arrive in Washington, DC, on April 27, where they will be received by President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump during a private tea at the White House.
The visit will also include a garden party, a ceremonial military review and a bilateral meeting between King Charles and the president, during which Queen Camilla and the first lady are expected to hold a separate meeting.
As previously reported by USA TODAY, the king will address a joint session of Congress on April 28, becoming only the second British monarch to do so. His mother, Queen Elizabeth II, addressed Congress during a visit to the United States in 1991.
Later that day, the king and queen will return to the White House for a state dinner hosted by the president and first lady.

Before departing Washington, the royal couple will lay a wreath and flowers to honor fallen service members, a gesture meant to underscore the longstanding military partnership between the United Kingdom and the United States.
The visit will then move to New York City, where the king and queen are expected to meet with first responders and families of victims of the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.
While in New York, the king will visit a grassroots community organization that mentors children and young people affected by food insecurity through a sustainable urban farming after-school program, reflecting his longtime interest in environmental and social causes.
Queen Camilla will attend an event celebrating the countries’ shared love of literature, including A.A. Milne’s Winnie‑the‑Pooh stories, which mark their 100th anniversary this year.
The U.S. leg of the tour will conclude in Virginia, where the king and queen will watch performances by Appalachian cultural groups representing an important part of the region’s heritage. The visit will include a community “block party” celebrating America’s 250th birthday before the royal couple departs for Bermuda, a British overseas territory where King Charles serves as head of state.Contributors: USA TODAY’s Natalie Neysa Alund and Brendan Morrow; Reuters
