Hacks might be ending with Season 5, which premiered on HBO Max on April 9, 2026, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that the story is over. During a recent interview, series creators and showrunners Lucia Aniello, Paul W. Downs, and Jen Statsky expressed interest in a potential reboot of the Primetime Emmy-winning series.
Hacks showrunners are open to the idea of a reboot
Aniello, Downs, and Statsky discussed the prospects of a reboot during an interview with Variety. According to the outlet, when asked if the story is truly complete, the trio said together, “We would never say never. We love these characters, we love this world, we love everybody in the ensemble. Right now we feel good about going out without overstaying our welcome — but you won’t have to twist my arm.”
Hannah Einbinder, who plays Ava Daniels in the series, also stated that she would return for a reboot. “Of course I would. Any excuse to be with my people.” Additionally, Megan Stalter, the actress essaying the role of Kayla Schaefer, joked that she would return for the reboot for “free.” She added, “Or $5 million that I can share with the cast.”
Hacks premiered on May 13, 2021, and has consistently garnered positive reviews and accolades throughout its run. Seasons 1, 2, and 5 have perfect 100% ratings on the review-aggregating site Rotten Tomatoes. Meanwhile, Seasons 2 and 3 drew incredible ratings of 98%. This has led to the show having an average rating of 99% across all five seasons.
Hacks revolves around Jean Smart’s Deborah Vance, a legendary stand-up comedian, and Ava, an outcast comedy writer, who forms a bond. The cast also includes Carl Clemons-Hopkins as Marcus Vaughan, Paul W. Downs as Jimmy LuSaque Jr., Rose Abdoo as Josefina, and Mark Indelicato as Damien Asada Agosto. Both Smart and Einbinder have received Emmys for their respective performances.
Notably, during the above-mentioned interview, the series creators confirmed that their next HBO project is in early development without revealing further details.
