Billy Butcher has never been the stable type. But in The Boys Season 5, his fractured psyche takes on a terrifying new form: one that turns him into something resembling a Terminator. The man fans have watched spiral for four seasons now shares his body with something else entirely. Karl Urban recently talked about his character’s personality and transformation in the upcoming season.
Karl Urban explains Butcher’s transformation into a Terminator-like killer
Butcher has always been driven by anger and purpose, but The Boys Season 5 takes that intensity to another level. After the events of Season 4, Butcher gives in to a “powered symbiote” growing inside him, and that changes everything about how he operates.
For Karl Urban, this opened up a new way to approach the character. Instead of playing Butcher as a single, consistent personality, he leaned into the idea that Butcher is now a “split personality,” torn between who he used to be and what he’s becoming. It’s not just a physical transformation, but a psychological one that reshapes his decisions and behavior.
Urban explained how he tackled this shift to ScreenRant. “Yes, actually it was really refreshing to get to season five and discover new territory to mine. And that was at the end of season four, Butcher gives over to this powered symbiote that is festering within him.”
That change led him to treat Butcher like “a dual character, like a character with a split personality.” The difference between the two sides is stark. When Butcher taps into this power, Urban described him as “very robotic, very Terminator-like. No compassion, just a cold, ruthless killer, a monster.” But the original Butcher hasn’t disappeared completely. “And then to counterbalance that in the times where he wasn’t that, you still have the Butcher of old. He is still mercurial and fun to be around,” Urban further noted.
Even with this split, Butcher remains focused on his mission. Urban still sees him as “the relentlessly driven leader of The Boys,” but now he’s also “struggling to hold onto the vestiges of his humanity.”
As The Boys Season 5 premieres on April 8, fans will get to see how it plays out.
