Project Hail Mary directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller have commented on how their version of The Flash would have been “different” than what we got.
Warner Bros. Pictures and DC Studios’ The Flash was released in United States theaters in July 2023. Directed by Andy Muschietti, the DCEU film stars Ezra Miller as Barry Allen, Michael Keaton as Bruce Wayne/Batman, Kiersey Clemons as Iris West, Ron Livingston as Henry Allen, Sasha Calle as Kara Zor-El/Supergirl, and Michael Shannon as General Zod.
The Flash had a troubled production history, as there were multiple directors and writers attached to the project over the years, with most of them departing due to creative differences. Lord and Miller were working on it in 2015, but left to make 2018’s Solo: A Star Wars Story, a project they were fired from in 2017.
What did Phil Lord and Chris Miller say about The Flash?
Speaking with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Lord and Miller were asked how much work they had actually done for The Flash before they left the project.
“We have a very elaborate treatment,” Miller said. Lord added that it was “pretty different” than the movie that ended up being made.
When asked if they could expand on what was so different about their version compared to the finished movie, the two declined. Lord said, “It’s a good idea that I’m afraid to not be able to use someday. That’s all I’ll say.”
Lastly, the two addressed whether they would be interested in returning to DC if James Gunn were to call them up for a project. They didn’t give a straightforward answer; rather, Miller just said, “We get intrigued by things that are intriguing.” Lord added that, ultimately, they “loved” the movie that Muschietti ended up making.
The Flash is currently streaming on HBO Max. Project Hail Mary, meanwhile, is now playing in theaters.
