New details about Marvel’s upcoming Punisher Special Presentation have emerged ahead of its release. The update clarifies one key aspect that had remained unclear. It offers a clearer picture of what viewers can expect from the Disney+ project.
The Punisher special’s runtime is longer than last two presentations
The upcoming Punisher Special Presentation has a confirmed runtime of 60 minutes, according to the Writers Guild of America listing details.
The Writers Guild of America listing describes the project as a live-action production distributed on Disney+ with a format length of “60 Minutes” and categorizes it under “Adventure, Action.” The credit listing also confirms, “Written by: Jon Bernthal & Reinaldo Marcus Green” and “Based on the Marvel Comics.”
Marvel Studios Special Presentations have previously ranged from 42 minutes for The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special to 52 minutes for Werewolf by Night. So, fans would be happy to see The Punisher get a longer special on Disney+.
Reinaldo Marcus Green directs the untitled Punisher television special for Disney+, while Green and Jon Bernthal write it. Marvel Studios positions it as the third Marvel Studios Special Presentation within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and it shares continuity with existing films and television series. Marvel Studios produces the project and continues the character’s story following earlier appearances in Daredevil and The Punisher.
Jon Bernthal reprises his role as Frank Castle / Punisher, with Jason R. Moore and Roe Rancell appearing in supporting roles. Bernthal conceived the special during filming of Daredevil: Born Again and developed the story before presenting it to Marvel Studios. The production team began filming in mid-July 2025 in New York City and wrapped in early August after a 12-day shoot.
Marvel Studios will release the special in mid-2026 on Disney+ as part of Phase Six of the MCU. Earlier reports indicated it would release alongside Daredevil: Born Again season two, but Jon Bernthal later stated it would release “around [the] same time” as Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which is set for July 2026 (via Screen Rant).
Brad Winderbaum described the project as “a shotgun blast of a story” (via EW). In a separate interview with EW, Jon Bernthal stated it would not be “Punisher-lite” and would present a “visceral, psychologically complex, unforgiving, no-holds-barred version of Frank.”
