Shortly after the official confirmation of Catherine O’Hara’s death, Golden Globe nominee Macaulay Culkin took to social media to share an emotional tribute to the award-winning actress, who played the role of his mother in the iconic Home Alone movies.
Per Us Weekly, O’Hara’s agency CAA confirmed that the Schitt’s Creek star passed away at the age of 71, “following a brief illness.” Further details about the said illness remained unknown.
What was Macaulay Culkin’s tribute to Catherine O’Hara?
On his Instagram account, Culkin posted a collage showing two photos of him and O’Hara. The first one was a scene from 1990’s Home Alone movie, while the second one was from the actor’s Hollywood Walk of Fame star ceremony last December 2023, where the late actress was one of the guest speakers. In his post, Culkin addressed O’Hara as “Mama,” which was followed by a heartbreaking message expressing how he thought they had more time with each other.
“Home Alone was, is, and always will be a beloved global sensation,” O’Hara previously said during Culkin’s Hollywood Walk of Fame star ceremony. “The reason families all over the world can’t let a year go by without watching and loving Home Alone together is because of Macaulay Culkin.” She added, “I know you worked really hard, but you made acting look like the most natural thing in the world to do.”
Besides the Home Alone movies, O’Hara had also worked in many other memorable movies, such as After Hours, Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Wyatt Earp, Waiting for Huffman, Pippi Longstocking, Best in Show, and Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events. She also found success in television, with iconic performances in the Schitt’s Creek sitcom, The Last of Us Season 2, and The Studio Season 1. The latter two recently earned her two Golden Globe nominations for Outstanding Guest Actress and Outstanding Supporting Actress, respectively.
