In his Sunday, Jan. 11, column, Ted Diadiun states that “Maduro’s increasing alliance with Russia and China, and his compliance with them on moving the international monetary unit for oil away from the dollar and toward the yuan and the ruble, could strengthen our enemies and imperil America’s economic and energy standing in the world” (“Knee-jerk opposition to Trump does the country a disservice“).
I’m confused. Why are Russia and China now our enemies? Hasn’t Donald Trump courted Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping for a decade? Hasn’t he colluded with them on spheres of influence? Hasn’t he dissed Europe, NATO and Ukraine in favor of Putin? Didn’t he torpedo our green energy industry and initiate a tariff war? It seems to me the GOP has already strengthened our enemies and imperiled every standing we had in the world.
It’s probably too late to send Venezuela’s Nicolás Maduro home. What’s done is done. Take him to court. But do not let Trump control Venezuela.
If we believe in capitalism, let Venezuela sell their oil where they please. If they need assistance with their oil fields, let them contract with whomever they choose. Let the Venezuelans determine their own government. For America to do anything less is to invite the GOP to invade Cuba, Columbia, Greenland, Panama and Canada.
