Matt Damon’s The Martian is leaving Netflix soon
Netflix subscribers will soon lose access to The Martian, as the acclaimed science-fiction film is scheduled to exit the platform in early January. According to What’s on Netflix, the film will be removed from Netflix’s library after January 1.
Originally released in 2015, The Martian is based on Andy Weir’s novel of the same name, with a screenplay by Drew Goddard. The story follows NASA astronaut Mark Watney, who is accidentally left behind by his crew on Mars after a violent storm derails their mission, and he is presumed dead during the emergency evacuation.
Against overwhelming odds, Watney survives and must rely on his intelligence to stay alive on the hostile planet. As Watney works to survive with limited resources, scientists at NASA discover evidence that he is still alive and begin coordinating a complex rescue effort. Meanwhile, Watney’s crewmates push for a dangerous return mission.
Matt Damon leads the cast as Dr. Mark Watney. Other cast members in the film also include Jessica Chastain as Commander Melissa Lewis, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Vincent Kapoor, Kristen Wiig as Annie Montrose, and Jeff Daniels as Theodore “Teddy” Sanders, among others.
The film was met with widespread critical praise upon release, earning a 91 percent critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes based on 385 reviews. Vague Visages reported, “As a piece of sweeping populist entertainment, The Martian is a great success, despite a couple of issues that perturb throughout.”
The Martian also received multiple major award nominations, including seven nods at the Academy Awards. Commercially, The Martian proved equally successful. According to Box Office Mojo, it earned more than $630 million globally.
