Real Madrid causing tensions in Spanish football

The president of the Spanish Football League, Javier Tebas, has accused Real Madrid and its president Florentino Perez of causing tensions in domestic football.

“I don’t think the tensions are being created by Barcelona football club, or any other club. Real Madrid is against everything – against Barcelona, against the referees, against absolutely everything,” Tebas told Spanish newspaper Sport.

Tebas assessed that Real is taking an inappropriate and wrong approach and is using a harmful narrative.

“They are suggesting that any current refereeing error is a consequence of events in 2019 or 2017. Their goal is to convince people that judges are currently under the influence. This is very dangerous because it is not true. This narrative is building and causing tensions,” he said.

Tebas mentioned the Negreiro case, a major scandal in Spanish football involving Barcelona and corruption.

“Everyone knows my position on this. I’m not saying that Barcelona’s actions or the actions of its directors were appropriate, far from it. We were the first to submit the case to the Public Prosecutor’s Office and the first to demand an investigation and, if necessary, sporting sanctions in accordance with Spanish regulations,” Tebas said.

“However, to claim that the penalty not awarded to Real Madrid was a direct consequence of past events is a completely different claim. It fuels the tensions that were spread by Real Madrid’s club television and recently reiterated by the president. I believe they are deeply disoriented,” Tebas added.

Tebas stressed that he does not see himself as a mediator between Barcelona and Real Madrid, given that “he is also a target of attacks.”
