The local Leipziger Volkszeitung currently reports that RB Leipzig veteran Kevin Kampl has opted to retire from professional football with immediate effect. Official confirmation from Kampl’s Bundesliga outfit is still lacking. The 35-year-old made three meaningless substitute appearances for the German Red Bulls (all past the 90th minute) in September. Since then, Kampl has been absent from the team for “personal reasons“.
The 28-times-capped Slovenian international came up through the Bayer Leverkusen youth ranks and has spent 15 years of his 18-year-professional career in German football. Kampl ended up contesting 270 German top flight fixtures with Leverkusen, Leipzig, and Borussia Dortmund. He also featured in the German lower divisions with VfL Osnabrück, SpVgg Greuther Fürth, and VfR Ahlen.
For many years – just like soon-to-depart club teammate Amadou Haidara – Kampl was a regular staple in the Leipzig midfield. The German-born Slovene has spent the last eight consecutive seasons playing in the German state of Saxony’s largest city. Kampl captured two DFB-Pokal trophies with Leipzig in 2022 and 2023.
