KÍ Klaksvík, the team from the small fishing town of Klaksvík in the Faroe Islands, secured the national title and became the first club officially qualified for the preliminary phase of the 2026/27 Champions League. The victory came with two rounds to spare, after a 2-1 win over 07 Vestur last Friday.
The result brought KÍ to 67 points, making it impossible for any rival to catch up in the standings. With the title, the team secures a spot in the first qualifying round of the next edition of the European tournament.
The team plays at the modest Við Djúpumýrar stadium, which has a capacity of about 2,500 spectators.
KÍ is the second most successful local champion, now with 22 titles, only behind HB Tórshavn, which has 24.
The club has participated six times in the preliminary stages of the Champions League, including the 2024/25 season, but has never reached the group stage. Its best international performance was in the Conference League in 2023, when it reached the group stage.
Klaksvík, the home city of KÍ, has about 5,000 inhabitants, equivalent to less than 0.02% of the population of Rio de Janeiro (about 6.7 million) and 0.01% of the population of São Paulo city, which exceeds 11 million.
In terms of proportion, the entire population of Klaksvík could easily fit into a fraction of some neighborhoods in São Paulo.
Pinheiros, for example, has about 65,000 residents, more than the entire population of the Faroe Islands, which is about 55,000 inhabitants.
KÍ’s stadium, Við Djúpumýrar, holds about 2,500 people, meaning that half the town fits in the stands, something unthinkable in urban centers like São Paulo or Rio, where a neighborhood of that size would be just a fraction of a stadium like Maracanã or Allianz Parque.
