White House officials say as part of the deal to spin off TikTok from its Chinese owner ByteDance, the U.S. version of the app will become majority owned and controlled by Americans. The U.S. would also control the algorithm, curating what users see on TikTok, and the data and privacy of the app would be led by U.S.-based tech company Oracle.
