The China International Fair for Trade in Services (CIFTIS) has gained prominence as an advocate for fostering partnerships across the world, as well the Dominican Republic which is using the opportunity to strengthen relations with China. In an interview with China News Network, the Dominican Republic the ambassador to China, Jose Julio Gomez Beato, underscored the possible CIFTIS for tourism, trade, investments and culture.
“CIFTIS is not only the domain to display the triumphs in the services sector,” said ambassador Gomez. “It is a positive development in the real world where cooperation exists and enables countries to pursue initiatives which add value to both economies and promote the cross border culture.” The remarks from the ambassador illustrate that the global trade fairs are becoming significant not only for the economic relations, but for the tourism and travel experience as well.
Tourism: A Pillar of the Dominican Economy
Tourism continues to be one of the strongest drivers of the Dominican Republic’s economy. With its diverse landscapes and vibrant culture, the country offers a wide array of travel experiences. The capital, Santo Domingo, is a treasure trove of colonial history, while Punta Cana is renowned for its luxury resorts and pristine beaches.
“Chinese tourists are not looking only for beaches or museums,” Gomez explained. “They seek a complete cultural and natural experience. The Dominican Republic has mountains, eco-tourism opportunities, historic cities, and of course, world-class beaches. From Punta Cana to Samaná, and even the northwest regions for adventure tourism, there is something for every type of traveler.”
Last year, more than 30,000 Chinese tourists visited the Dominican Republic, reflecting growing interest in the country as a vacation destination. Ambassador Gomez stressed that strengthening tourism cooperation with China can attract even more visitors by showcasing the country’s cultural, historical, and natural diversity.
Expanding Trade Relations with China
Beyond tourism, trade relations between the Dominican Republic and China have seen significant growth. Since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 2018, China has become the Dominican Republic’s second-largest trading partner.
“Chinese enterprises are increasingly exploring our free trade zones, while exports like Dominican cigars and agricultural products have strong potential in the Chinese market,” Gomez said. “We offer preferential policies to investors, such as tax exemptions of up to ten years for investments in hotels, which makes the Dominican Republic an attractive destination for both business and leisure travel.”
This growing economic engagement also benefits tourists indirectly, as increased investment in hospitality and infrastructure ensures a better travel experience. Enhanced transport links, new resorts, and cultural programs all contribute to making the Dominican Republic more accessible and attractive to international visitors.
Cultural Exchange and Education
The ambassador emphasized the importance of cultural exchange in strengthening bilateral relations. “Tourism is not just about visiting a place; it’s about understanding the culture and people. China and the Dominican Republic have a lot to learn from each other, from music and art to culinary traditions.”
Gomez also highlighted personal steps toward cultural integration, sharing that he has begun learning Chinese. “I’ve been taking classes for four months. Chinese is challenging, but I’m eager to improve. My goal is to conduct interviews and discussions in Chinese in the future, which reflects our commitment to deepening ties.”
Opportunities for Chinese Tourists
The Dominican Republic’s diverse tourism offerings make it particularly appealing to Chinese travelers seeking unique experiences. Santo Domingo provides a glimpse into the country’s colonial past with its historic streets and landmarks. Meanwhile, Punta Cana and Samaná offer sun-soaked beaches and luxury resorts, perfect for relaxation. Adventure seekers can explore the country’s mountains, forests, and eco-tourism sites, while cultural enthusiasts can enjoy local music, festivals, and cuisine.
By promoting these experiences through events like CIFTIS, the Dominican Republic hopes to position itself as a premier destination for Chinese tourists. Enhanced tourism partnerships are expected to increase visitor numbers, provide economic benefits to local communities, and foster greater mutual understanding between the two countries.
Impressions of China and Future Cooperation
Ambassador Gomez spoke highly of China’s combination of historical heritage and modern development. “Beijing impresses with its culture and history, while cities like Shanghai and Shenzhen showcase innovation and growth. Observing this development inspires us to improve our tourism infrastructure and services to meet international standards.”
Through platforms like CIFTIS, both nations aim to expand cooperation in tourism, trade, and cultural exchange. The Dominican Republic hopes to attract not only tourists but also investors who can contribute to the country’s growing hospitality and service sectors.
Looking Ahead: Strengthening Bilateral Ties
The 2025 CIFTIS currently underway and continuing till 14 September offers an extra opportunity further along the lines of discussions and collaborations. Ambassador Gomez is rather upbeat and hopeful on the matter as these efforts deepen the interest of the Dominican Republic in China and trade along with tourism and culture exchange flourishes.
The Dominican Republic is, along with other countries, looking forward to the tourism boom post pandemic, and as an added advantage, the unrivalled combination of nature, history and culture along with the deepening trade relations with China should prove to be an attraction for tourists coming from China.
