Newswatch 16’s Kerry Kearns spoke with a doctor who emphasizes that nutritious meals and hydration improve school performance and focus.
PENNSYLVANIA, USA — As we ease into the back-to-school grind, it’s important to remember that your child’s eating habits can play a major role in their classroom performance.
“Studies have actually really shown that having a nutritious breakfast and nutritious lunch really impacts how kids perform at school. Kids who eat a good breakfast and lunch perform better in school and on standardized tests. They have improved energy and focus,” said Dr. Jessica Osman, UPMC Pediatrician.
Dr. Jessica Osman, a Pediatrician with UPMC, explains that fueling up with the right foods not only boosts energy but also enhances attention and memory.
There are foods that can help, and others to avoid.
“So we really want to be providing our kids with whole foods, things like fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and proteins. Avoid sugary snacks, sugary beverages. We don’t want that mid-morning sugar crash,” said Dr. Osman.
Dr. Osman also stresses the importance of H2O, “Don’t forget to stay hydrated. Water really goes a long way to improve concentration and focus as well.”
So, whether you’re packing lunch or sending them off with a snack, remember that the right fuel can set your kid up for a great day of learning.
