NEW YORK (KNOE) – A new app that allows users to notify others of nearby immigration enforcement activity has just launched nationwide.
According to the company’s website, Coqui is a free, anonymous app that its creators say was made by and for immigrant communities.
Safety features include app encryption, masking of its users’ locations, and anti-trolling protocols. In addition, no personal data is collected from its users either.
Coqui can be used to share real-time information about immigration enforcement activity, to join groups, and to see locations and businesses that are designated by the app as safe spots.
ICE Deputy Director Madison Sheahan told CBS News she thinks such apps are dangerous and could be used to spot and ambush ICE agents, Lilia Luciano reported.
The creator of the app told CBS News that he wanted to protect his identity, so only his first name, Peter, was provided.
Peter said that he made the app not just to keep people safe but for practical reasons, too.
He explained that some of the employees at his animal shelter were scared to leave their homes to come to work, and he needed their help to keep his business running.
