China’s reaction comes as Trump says he would like to ‘just send letters out to everybody: ‘Congratulations, you’re paying 25 percent”
China expressed opposition to “any deal” agreed upon “at the expense of China’s interests for so-called tariff relief,” a Commerce Ministry spokesperson said Saturday.
“If that happens, China will never accept it and will resolutely counter to safeguard its legitimate rights and interests,” the spokesperson added.
It comes after US President Donald Trump said Friday that Washington “can do whatever” it “wants” on the flexibility of the original deadline for a 90-day reprieve from the US tariffs that is set to expire July 9, and he would “like to just send letters out to everybody: ‘Congratulations, you’re paying 25 percent'”
The spokesperson said since April, Washington “has imposed the so-called ‘reciprocal tariffs’ on its global trading partners.”
“This is a typical example of unilateral bullying, which has severely undermined the multilateral trading system and disrupted the normal international trade order. China has always firmly opposed such actions,” the spokesperson added.
Beijing welcomes “all parties to resolve economic and trade differences with the US through equal consultations,” the spokesperson said, urging all parties to “always stand on the side of fairness, justice, and historical correctness” and to “firmly uphold international economic and trade rules and the multilateral trading system.”
Trump said Thursday that the US signed a trade deal with China on Wednesday, without disclosing details, and Beijing on Friday confirmed the details on the framework of implementing the Geneva trade talks consensus with the US.
