Your Hong Kong weekend drinks guide for December 12-14

While many Hongkongers are already preparing to wind down for the Christmas holidays, the local bar scene is kicking into high gear. Whether you’re looking for a fresh new venue on ever-changing Peel Street, hunting for unique flavours distilled from Japanese ingredients, or have a hankering to sample the wares of one of the best bars in Bangkok, here are three happenings to plan your weekend around.

What: Anyone looking for a new spot to raise a glass this Christmas or New Year’s should head to Peel Street. There, Leandro Chan and Richard Fernie, formerly of low-key Sheung Wan cocktail spot Behind 69, are celebrating the launch of Not 2 Sweet, a “tongue-in-cheek” addition to Peel Street’s growing assortment of recent openings. The name was inspired by the vague (and clearly irksome) answers Chan and Fernie frequently received when they asked customers about their cocktail preferences at Behind 69. Replies like, “something not too sweet”, “not too cold”, or even “stronger”.

In response, the co-founders have whipped up a menu of experimental libations such as the Not Too Smoky, a hefty combination of bourbon, Islay scotch, mescal, Campari, red vermouth and bitters tied together with toasted rice and clarified milk. If you’re feeling truly adventurous, the Spicy Chicken Ramen is only described as having “an assortment of mysterious ingredients”.

When: Tuesday to Sunday, 4pm to midnight

Where: Not 2 Sweet, 33 Peel Street, Central
