When Jeff Bezos met Bihari sattu roti: Amazon founder and partner Lauren Sanchez visit Vikas Khanna's Bungalow in NY

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and his partner Lauren Sanchez recently dined at chef Vikas Khanna’s Bungalow in New York City. The restaurant, known for its authentic Indian cuisine, has quickly become a celebrated destination since its opening in March 2024. Khanna shared a photograph of the couple on X (formerly Twitter), expressing his joy in hosting them.

“When @JeffBezos said the visit to Bungalow was like a pilgrimage, it filled my heart with pure joy & pride,” wrote Khanna. He included hashtags such as #PowerOfAuthenticity and #SoftPowerOfIndia to emphasise the cultural significance of the moment.

A Menu Celebrating Indian Diversity

The dining experience featured a diverse menu of Indian delicacies from various regions, personally curated by Khanna. The dishes ranged from Bengali Kasundi Tandoori Avocado and Bihari Sattu Roti to Udipi’s Annanas Menaskai and Gujarati Tindora Pickle. Other offerings included Nagaland’s Black Rice Pudding, Indore-inspired Dahi Kebab, Jewish-Indian Chicken Chitranee, and Sindhi Style Achari Aloo.

For dessert, Bezos and Sanchez were served Gulab Jamun Ice Cream paired with a Millet-Chocolate Cake. Sharing the menu details on X, Khanna wrote, “A taste of India for @JeffBezos,” showcasing his pride in presenting India’s culinary diversity to global dignitaries.

Bungalow: A Rising Star in New York’s Culinary Scene

Since its opening earlier this year, Bungalow has earned significant accolades, including the prestigious Michelin 2024 Bib Gourmand Award. This recognition honours restaurants that deliver exceptional quality at affordable prices. Additionally, Bungalow was featured in The New York Times’ list of Top 14 New Restaurants.

Reflecting on these achievements, Khanna posted on X: “Within a matter of a few hours, Bungalow received 2 incredible global recognitions: Top 14 New Restaurants by The New York Times and Michelin 2024 Bib Gourmand Award. Just 5 years ago, my life revolved around my sister’s healing process, Feed India, and fighting for my freedom. I’d left hope of ever opening another Indian restaurant. Bungalow was born out of promises, heartbreaks, and devotion to serving Indian culture and cuisine to the world.”

Khanna dedicated this milestone to his late sister, whose memory inspired him to open the restaurant. “Thank you, Universe, for giving us this historic moment,” he added.

Indian Cuisine on the Global Stage

Bezos’ visit is the latest in a series of high-profile endorsements for Bungalow. Days before hosting Bezos, Khanna welcomed Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan to the restaurant. Sharing a heartfelt post about the experience, Khanna wrote: “When SRK visited Bungalow and asked me to sit with him, as we spoke about me going to the cinema every day to watch DDLJ with my sister and every movie of his, he became my hero for who he is.”

Bungalow’s success and these notable visits underline the growing appreciation for Indian cuisine worldwide. Khanna’s innovative yet authentic approach has positioned Bungalow as a global ambassador for India’s culinary heritage.

In addition to exploring Indian gastronomy, Bezos and Sanchez are currently preparing for their winter wedding, set to take place this Christmas in Aspen, Colorado. Known for its picturesque landscape and festive charm, Aspen will host the couple’s celebration with elegant décor, twinkling lights, and a guest list featuring Hollywood A-listers.
