We have all been there, standing in line at our favorite coffee shop while someone rattles off an order that sounds more like a grocery list than a drink. You try not to laugh, but we’ve all had that one moment.
What Researchers Wanted To Know
A team asked more than 2,300 people across the country to share their go-to coffee order so they could figure out which states talk the longest at the counter and who makes the most tweaks to their drink.
How New York Stacks Up
Good news, New Yorkers aren’t as dramatic as you might think. The average coffee order in the Empire State is just over 6.5 words, a little shorter than the national average of 6.9. Not bad for a state that is known for being in a hurry.

What We Like To Drink
The top choice in New York is a good old latte, usually around $5.75. When it comes to seasonal flavors, pumpkin spice still owns the crown. No big shocker there.
Simple Line vs. Complicated Line
Here’s the interesting part. More than half of New York respondents (about 55%) say they want separate lines for simple orders and complicated ones. I would be all for that because I’m a “buy the special of the week” kind of guy.
The Longest Order Recorded
Just when you think New Yorkers keep things simple, someone hits us with this: “Iced quad blonde espresso in a venti cup, 3 pumps of classic syrup, vanilla sweet cream foam, and splash of regular milk.” That gives me a headache just hearing about it. If you want to see the list of the states with the longest coffee orders, go here.
