Atletico Madrid vs Barcelona: La Liga preview
With the first leg of the all-Spanish quarter-final in the Champions League to be played across the next two midweeks, this clash in La Liga sits on the doorstep of the intense second phase of a rivalry that’s cramming five fixtures into two and a half months.
The stakes are high for all of them, too. Barcelona’s title hopes are in good shape. The Blaugrana are four points clear of Real Madrid at the top but Atleti, with a return to the Champions League in mind, will have no qualms whatsoever about doing their city rivals a favour today.
When they met in the league in December, Barcelona won 3-1 at Camp Nou thanks to goals from Raphinha, Dani Olmo and Ferran Torres. They won last season’s league game at the Metropolitano too.

Defending champions Barcelona are in typically imperious form. Hansi Flick’s team have won their last five La Liga matches, eight of the last nine, and 17 of the last 19. Both of the losses came away from home, against Real Sociedad in January and Girona in February.
Diego Simeone’s Atleti lost their last league game against Real Madrid but won the previous four. They’ve dropped only five points at home all season, losing just once on their own patch.
There are 16 points between these teams as they kick off this evening but they’re playing each other often enough to know that they’re a little closer than that on any given day. Simeone will surely have something up his sleeve.
FourFourTwo’s prediction
Atletico Madrid 3-2 Barcelona
Barcelona might be favourites on paper but with Atleti at home and two huge Champions League matches to come, we’re coming down on the side of chaos.
